Generic rock? flashing tiles?......WHAT?

So, in my most recent game and first on .16 (simply because that's what the lazy newb pack is up to) I get an embark where immediately I notice about 20% of the surface tiles are flashing like mad, I don't mean the "more than one thing is on this tile" sort of flash. More like an extreme ultraspeed flash.


Naturally I check what sort of block this thing is, turns out there are apparently hundreds of different types of blocks there, sand, rock, gems, you name it. Of course I decide that this stuff must be mined out, but it turns out when I start mining that at least the top layers are all completely made out of rock. it has no other name, it's just "Rock" The flashing seems to happen only on the top.

Going back into the embark selection thing, it turns out the 1st four or so layers of the entire world are made out of "Rock"


is there anyone here who can explain this or has had similar things happen? or am I on my own here?

Have you edited or even looked at the raws with a program that automatically creates backups?  Did you extract over a previous DF version?

This sounds like one of those things which results from incorrectly-modified raws.

Ah, I got it working. It must have been something to do with the raws or something because I re-extracted the original and everything was fine.

I don't know what though as I hadn't touched them.

Usually that happens when you have duplicate entries. I had a save where all marble was some strange unstable substance which boiled into mist when mined and cycled rapidly through all mineral types when loo(k)ed at.

This has happened before, most commonly because someone just extracted a newer DF over an older one.
