Oddjob Challenge
« on: November 30, 2010, 04:17:23 pm »

The Scifi channel ran a James Bond marathon on Thanksgiving. This and Misterstone's Loincloth Challenge thread gave me the idea for the Oddjob Challenge. Rules are as follows.

1) Mod the following into your game.
  a) Add this to item_helm:
Code: [Select]
[ITEM_HELM:ITEM_HELM_BOWLER]
[NAME:bowler:bowlers]
[LAYER:OVER]
[COVERAGE:50]
[LAYER_SIZE:20]
[LAYER_PERMIT:100]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:2]
[SOFT]
[LEATHER]
[STRUCTURAL_ELASTICITY_WOVEN_THREAD]
  b) Add this to as many civilizations as you like in entity_default:
Code: [Select]
[HELM:ITEM_HELM_BOWLER:COMMON]
2) Start as a Hero.
3) No metal armor. Leather is acceptable I suppose.
4) Acquire a Bowler hat as quickly as you can if you don't start with one.
5) No weapons or shields. The only item you are allowed to throw is your Bowler hat. All combat must be done through wrestling, unarmed strikes, or throwing hats.
6) No companions. Oddjob is a henchman, he does not have them.
7) You may carry a backup hat incase you lose your main one, however you are not allowed to throw it at an opponent that you have already thrown your main hat at.
8) However, if you throw your main hat and retrieve it, you may throw it again.
9) You are not allowed to train your skills by fighting small, harmless animals.

Optional Rules

10) Wear only cloth. No leather and NO METAL.
11) Put as many points as you like into Strength and Toughness, but no Agility.
12) Collect anything gold that you come across. Your boss will appreciate it.
13) Eat only cats.

Killing a named opponent is worth 1 point.
Killing a Hero level opponent (Lord/Master/Elite) is worth 3 points.
Killing a semi-megabeast or night creature/spouse is worth 5 points. (Bogeymen do not count)
Killing a megabeast is worth 10 points.
Killing an opponent with a thrown Bowler triples the number of points earned (3/9/15/30).

Keep track of your own points and use the honor system.

* Whoever has the most points earns the right to use the title "Ultimate Henchman"
* Whoever collects the most gold (by weight) earns the right to use the title "The Man/Woman with the Golden Hat"
* The first person to kill a Gabbro Man, Iron Man, Bronze Colossus, or similar creature that is shaped like a human but made of stone or metal earns the right to use the title "Statue Beheader"

This is genius, by the way.

iirc, oddjob's hat had a razor edge... isn't that how it got lodged in the steel bars at the end of goldfinger?

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

Yup, maybe that should be added. Of course, according to Mythbusters it couldn't do any of that stuff even with the razor edge, but hey: this is a game where you can decapitate someone with their own vomit.

I was going to mention that. :P

You're right, but I don't know how I would go about modding in something like that... In DF, the hat would either be entirely made of metal or entirely  made of cloth/leather. I don't know whether or not adding something along the lines of...
Code: [Select]
[ATTACK:EDGE:10000:4000:slice:slices:NO_SUB:1250]...would work for a piece of clothing or not and even if it did, it would be largely restricted by the material of the hat itself.

If someone can make a more accurate Mod-Bowler, I'll might allow it, but I don't know whether or not it can even be done.

And now one for the Austin Powers' shoe!

Hey, if you want to do a variation of the Oddjob challenge where you use a shoe instead (Randomtask Challenge!), you're more than welcome to. The concept is essentially the same... Only difference is the article of clothing you throw.

Does the [SHARP] token do it?  Maybe you can get an idea from the raws for the knapping reaction.

Mmm...if you wan to make it sharp, you're gonna need to make it a weapon instead of a normal hat. Unless it's a heavy silver hat for sheer blunt force trauma...

In the reaction_other raw file, it has the [FORCE_EDGE] tag attached to the product definition of the knapping reaction.  Is there a corresponding [EDGE] or [SHARP] tag that would make your hat as sharp as cloth can possibly be?  Otherwise, just make it out of metal.
