the main advantage of thatch is that i keeps the warmth in, and it was cheap and light. Stone roofs were historically, quite costly. Since the cost of a stone roof is not simulated in DF this wouldnt be an issue, im not sure if heat loss is simulated but i doubt it is at this level of sophistication. I mainly ask for thatch for realisim in some human settlements.

Heat loss is probably simulated in some ways, but it rarely effects game play. Once we have beings able to die of exposure, it could get a lot more interesting.

Well, Thatch burns very well. So if/when we get the ability to set fire/destroy structures in adventure mode, it would work quite well.

If I'm to be correct, I do believe grass was also used as roofing.
We could have a "Collect Grass" designation. It would require grass, of course.

Thatch could be left over from milling plants. But generally I just think we need 'rooving'.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
