Trouble getting started
« on: October 21, 2007, 08:11:00 pm »

I recently downloaded Dwarf Fortress. When I tried to customize my first group of 7 dwarves, I hit a problem. The + and - keys don't seem to be working at all. The game doesn't recognize that I'm hitting them. Also, the up and down arrow keys tend to act oddly sometimes. I'm thinking this might have something to do with the laptop keyboard I'm using. Any suggestions or help? I'm really interested in playing this.

Actually, I think I've just figured it out myself. I found the keys, I just have to hold the little button in the corner. Sorry!

It specifically wants the number pad + and -, which are absent on most laptop keyboards. You can usually shift some keys in the middle of your keyboard to be a simulated number pad though, and it sounds like that's what you found.

Yeah. This game isn't terribly laptop-friendly at the moment. I personally invested in a USB numpad so I can play it, but if you aren't inclined to spend $20 or however much one costs, you can fiddle around with the /data/init/interface.txt file. At least, I think that's the correct file...

EDIT: Nevermind this. I just realized that there's a keybindings menu if you hit escape... Never really paid attention to that before...

It's way less than $20; I think mine may have been $5 or less.
