Two ice trap ideas
« on: November 22, 2010, 08:38:16 am »

Facts:
1) Any water exposed to outside in freezing climate instantly freezes.
2) Any ice with magma underneath will turn into water.
3) Magma can be removed by atomsmashing.
4) Atomsmashing can be triggered by pressure plate.
5) Pressure plate can be triggered by enemies.
Soooooo...
Idea #1:
Code: [Select]
z0(outside):

# = wall, . = floor with 1/7-2/7 of water, ^ = pressure plate that lifts drawbridge beneath, < = ramps, D = drawbridge that rises to the right (or a series of 1x3 drawbridges if that doesn't work) with magma on the middle 9 tiles (when drawbridge is raised)
Goblins step onto pressure plates, magma gets smashed, water freezes, goblins get encased. Pressure plates can be elevated on the level above to avoid destruction. Reset by triggering drawbridge and filling bottom level with magma.
Idea #2:
Code: [Select]
z0(outside):
#<<<##

######
# = wall, . = natural ice, ^ = pressure plate on built floor that lowers drawbridge beneath, < = ramps, D = drawbridge that rises to the right, W = water, ~ = magma
Goblins step on pressure plates, drawbridge lowers, magma flows onto it, ice thaws, goblins fall down and drown. Reset by triggering the drawbridge.
Will those ideas work?

you should treat magma more ecologically - thus, reuse it!
instead of placing atom smasher you can use retracting bridge with magma above it. When bridge is retracted, it drops magma under bridge, and it can be pumped back once bridge returns.
Also it's easier to link. You just link plaet to bridge, while with atom smasher you'll need an inverter - signal from plate should be inverted to be linked to smasher.

I just saw a guy with two broken legs push a minecart with a corpse in it. Yeah.

Hm... can magma melt ice across a z-level?

I guess no. You need it to be exactly beneath frozen tile

Hm... so maybe the second trap will work if the magma's lowered by a level and then thrown up via drawbridges when goblins step onto the plates, to melt the ice?..

You could have two sides from which the magma comes from to prevent only one side thawing.
