I feel kind of grateful to minecraft because I think it siphoned off some of the DF players who thought the game is supposed to be a giant lego set and complained about any changes or announced features that might get in the way of their building a giant statue of Darth Vader with magma coming out of his ears and so on.

Hows that for catty!?

Minecraft is not an alpha game. It is a commercial product that an entire company of at least 5 people depend on to feed themselves and their families. That's not alpha. So Minecraft's PURCHASERS are entitled to yell about every little thing in the game they hate, particularly when bits they like are changed and no longer work or no longer work as they should.

This leads to the all the flaming and immaturity in the Minecraft forums, as players who aren't bothered by the changes, or don't care about the new broken aspects, tell the others "Just do X and live with it!"

I remember when 4chan DDoSsed Notch. His supporters pissed off the 4chan army. Not smart. He's lucky they moved on to harass others. They can actually get fairly nasty when they get their back up. And none of the 4chan DDoS army paid for the game--- so if Notch had packed his bag up and moved on, that would have made the army supremely happy, as it would have caused the people that ticked them off even more personal trouble and sadness.

4chan itself is a fun and fairly mature place--- on about 50% of its boards. Of the rest, some are just serious, and some are just silly. Then there's /b/. It is silly, immature, and out to try to shock you (like a 10 year old with an internet connection and having discovered freaky pics trying to shock his 8 year old baby sister). You don't go to 4chan with a sensitive skin though or you are bound to become irritated or upset by some /b/tard out of place or its general "free speech, free thought, free arguing for all (but you might need to go to board xyz)" attitude.
I just incredulously raised my eyebrow so hard that it tore off my face, reached escape velocity, and did some serious damage to a few satellites as it rocketed off toward parts unknown.

Anyone one who bought the game knew that notch said would be buggy and unstable because it is basically just his rough working version. He released it so people could have something to play as he developed the game, not so that people could have an evolving finished product that is just being updated. It's still in alpha, it's not finished, and you and everyone else bought it with this knowledge. Anyone who complains about these things should kindly grab two pieces of U-232, walk a few miles into the desert, and start smacking them together as hard as they can.

Protip: a mature forum doesn't need to keep mentioning it's mature, it just is

Also, to further the politically incorrect speculation, does white-knighting for black people make it... black-knighting?

MyLittlePonyBuiltMyHotRod, this is your first warning. I would like to direct you to read our forum's FAQ and posting guidelines before posting again. Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

Why do I feel sad about 80% of posts in this thread? Oh well, I'd better go back and hide in the Modding forums...
You're not alone.

I haven't read much of this board lately, someone please tell me this thread doesn't represent DF General Discussion at all and is just a horrible one-off joke.

To continue on the discussion, I do agree that the attitude of Minecraft players when expressing critique of the game is terrifying. It seems like there's some Youtube-comment-like culture going on with it. I have no idea what could've started it though.

Someone argued wisely that DF doesn't have that vitriolic a community because the game isn't in any way competitive, so people have no reason to get up in arms about it. That should apply to Minecraft too, so something definitely went wrong somewhere along the way.

Umm... hello?

Anyone in there?

.....

This is the internet. People are unable to resist making a topic about the maturity of Bay12 forums as immature as possible.

I think that since there isn't much to make gameplay-wise, they make purely cosmetic things that are relatively easy to make, so they don't have to collaborate and can, instead, brag to everyone else. We cooperatively make awesome stuff.

Now I leave this thread as I have entered, because I too think the constant minecraft bashing and constant DF praising has grown somewhat tiresome. Also, we totally whip the minecraft forums :-X

on being generally more mature and less vitriolic towards each other than most communities. I have been playing Minecraft a little lately because it is basically the best set of Legos ever, and I am constantly amazed at how catty and eager to fight over who has better spelling/mines/doom fortresses that game's community is.

Ugh, fifth thread like that this week. Seriously, lurk more, noob.

Dude, if I saw that on the MC forums I would totally drop a warning and leave a snide comment on the general intelligence of the community.

Seriously, I think the minecraft forums have destroyed my faith in humanity.

It's full of those chodes over at that internet imbred cesspool called 4chan.  Most are the notorious /b tards.

Comparing Minecraft and DF communities are like comparing the games themselves.  One is basic (even my 5 year old daughter plays it), has almost no learning curve, childlike interface, primitive graphics,  and the other is a 3d lego block type game.
