Not realy about gameplay but...
« on: October 13, 2007, 08:45:00 pm »

Ever since I got dwarf fortress I have been having some computer problems, mainly with viruses. Before I downloaded dwarf fortress I never had any viruses ever. It seems every computer I download it onto gets a virus. At first I thought maby it was bad luck but today when I tried to start up DF I got a message from internet explorer saying "this page has an unspecified potential security flaw. would you like to continue?" has any one else got any thing like this?

This... makes no sense. Are you suggesting that DF is a virus? I'm pretty sure it's designed to destroy your social life; not your computer.

No problem here. My PC has been, for all intents and purposes, virus free the whole time it's been with me, and I've had DF for a while.

Sounds to me like you managed to visit a bad website with a malicious ActiveX control which took advantage of one of IE's security exploits, and this might've attached itself to your computer.  Dwarf Fortress from the site is clean -- I just verified it with Grisoft AVG Free, with virus database 269.14.9/1068, released October 13th.

It's also possible that it's just uncanny coincidence.  I did some verbal tech support at work one time where one of my co-workers said they had a virus and needed some way to get rid of it; I told them about AVG Free, but mentioned that in all likelihood it was just an error in the system.  Lots of people think they have viruses when they really don't.  I'm not sure how tech savvy you are, so this is obviously blind assumption and might not be accurate at all. ;-)

[edit]Employees, ha, I wish.  Co-workers.

Stop using internet explorer. Seriously, just stop using that peice of crap, and use firefox instead... Something that doesn't have security leaks out the ass.

Then go get AVG Free, and scan your HD.
Then go get Ad-aware, and scan your HD again.

...
And if you are insinuating that DF is a virus, you need to go to the doctor and get YOUR HD examined.

Firefox is a gem, but it's not a panacea.  It has its own problems.  In 2005-2006, I believe it was, Firefox had 3 security alerts, compared to Internet Explorer which had 5 security alerts.  I'd dig up the link but I have absolutely no idea where it is. ;-)

I think they finally started doing things halfway right with Internet Explorer as of the latest version, although I do agree that it's still not as good as Firefox, and still is a load of proprietary and non-standard cruft.

(Yes, I do use Firefox.)

hehe i use IE, hell i dont even use the latest... i use IE6, and i have no virus problems whatsoever... of course i AM computer-savvy, i repair the damn things, and i use NOD32  <3  i love you eseT.  But in all reality, most "viruses" are just errors, things that just kinda happen... like our savegame bloats. and most true virus infections are accidently from anywhere, and from mundane things, like the whole "IE Exploit, Viruses Through Pictures" thing. The best advice i can EVER give is, keep away from shady porn, shady sites, and if you get pop-up "windows notices" like   "windows detects that you may be infected with a virus, click here to fix the problem" .... just .... dont it will probably lead you to one of "Spy-Sheriff's" many websites, (they keep re-naming and re-distributing it) those websites, auto-download you with spy-ware and trojans... it all ends up very bad.

An alternative to Firefox is Opera, which I happen to like, tho I'm not sure how it compares to Firefox security-wise. Nary a virus have I had, but then I'm pretty tech-savvy so I avoid the obvious tricks. DF is certainly not the problem, otherwise the dozens of people on the forums would have spotted it, methinks.
