No one can find path.
« on: September 23, 2006, 05:53:00 pm »

I keep running into a bug with my fortresses. After a few years, all my dwarves become idiots and are completely unable to find a path for anything. After this happening several times I noticed that it happened after I build a secondary storage area. After I made an extra room for food, my fisherdwarves got stuck and couldn't put fish in barrels. When I designated a secondary area for finished goods, dwarves started standing in it trying to put goods in bins but there aren't any bins in that area, they are in the first one.

They seem to be trying to move stuff to and from one designation, when it's actualy in the other one.

I run into this bug every time I make a fortress, but only noticed the 2 designation thing just now.

The only time I saw the "find path" message is when I blocked my tunnels with floodgates.  Once I dug around them and installed doors, all was well.

Have you checked to see if any of your doors are locked?

These things happen in general when the item they are concerned with is either not in the same part of the fortress as they are in, or its destination is not in the same part of the fortress they are in.  It can manifest itself in a lot of ways.  A fish could be on the other side of the river, a piece of a stockpile could be in an inaccessible location, a door could be locked, a dwarf could be trapped some place...  there are many possibilities.

The problem is, once this bug starts every dwarf eventualy gets stuck. I never lock any doors, and there's no reason they can't get to the place they're trying to get to. After my fortress gets so big all my dwarves just get stuck and start spamming.

This isn't just a few dwarves acting stupid. This is all of a sudden it's like someone fliped a switch and within a few minutes all my dwarves are standing around starving.

There are still so many things that cause pathing issues that it's impossible to say what's going on without more information.  You can send in a save if you want.

region#.sav + region# folder in some kind of zip/rar
