Not so much a grinding sound, more of a click every few seconds.

The platter is probably good still, but your motor is hosed.

The data should be recoverable, but it would be a cleanroom type operation to remove the platter and install it into another drive of the same model, which will cost some $$$.

Ha, ninjad.

But yea that's about my take on it too.  It would be a specialist job to get the data off of it. I don't think that's something the average computer repair place would be equipped to do.

Good thing you didn't have much important data on it.  I had the misfortune of having to tell an CPA that once and they were pissed.

Anyway, new HD is costing $135. Which is significantly lower than what I expected (250). Also, they replaced the plastic lining for free.

But this is great, now my PC is acting up. I can't play any of my CD-ROM games. Some intense graphical error. I suppose I can solve this with liberal application of system reboot, but then I'll have to do my freaking Firefox bookmarks all over again.

export your bookmarks from firefox (probably will give you a html file), put them on a flash drive, then import them back into Firefox later.

CPA is a Certified Public Accountant.

It could also just be that your drivers aren't installed or configured correctly or something to that effect.  After replacing a hard drive it is often a big chore to reinstall all the drivers for things like the ethernet and graphics.



It could also be something happened to your system to cause the hard drive to fail, if you are having hardware issues and it isn't drivers it could be that a surge or something messed something in your mobo.

I'm talking about 2 different computers here.

But I probably should update my PC's drivers.

Raid1 is the way to go.

HDD's are pretty cheap these days, so just get two of them. If one fails you have a perfect and 100% up to date backup. Just swap out the dead drive with a new one, your raid will be rebuilt automatically, and then you have the redundancy protection again.

The only way you can lose all data is if both drives fail at the same time.

Knowing my luck, that's what would happen.

DF saves aren't that big, I'll just save them on a flash drive. And while I'm at it, I'll put DF itself on the other one.
