Tulon "Sausagelinks" Oltartomus, the Warrior Cat
« on: November 15, 2010, 03:25:17 am »

There was once a Dwarven city called Darkmoon, which sat at the confluence of two rivers. These dwarves were known for not being smart, as they decided to build their grand city above ground. And in this grand above ground city lived a cat, named Tulon Oltartomus.

Tulon Oltartomus had fought Forgotten Beasts, Blind Cave Ogres, and all manners of vile creatures, and survived. When everyone else ran away to the safety of the castle, Tulon Oltartomus skittered into the fray with claws flailing, saving Darkmoon's military from certain defeat with sheer feline ferocity on multiple occasions.

Then one day, a new enemy approached the city, and it didn't come from underground. Swarms of goblins showed up outside the unfinished walls riding all sorts of nefarious beasts. The Dwarves watched as Tulon Oltartomus led the military's charge against the vile invaders. An epic battle ensued, and the Dwarves were victorious, all thanks to the courage of Tulon Oltartomus.

But this time, Tulon Oltartomus did not came away unscathed. In the days following the battle, the dwarves kept hearing the sound of juicy meat slapping against the stone halls of the castle. Dwarves walking the city's avenues were tripping over a ropelike object, but when they got up, there was no object to be found.

Some time later, they figured out what was behind the mystery. Tulon Oltartomus had been injured by the goblins!

The dwarves were surprised to find that Tulon Oltartomus had been eviscerated by goblins and had been dragging her guts around the city for weeks.

Those two squiggly lines are her guts, which she proceeded to drag across the entry hall of the castle.

Of course, none of this phased poor Tulon Oltartomus one bit, and she patrolled the city as she always did, walking merrily along with her intestines on the floor behind her.

The city's best engraver produced this artistic depiction of the event:

Tulon Oltartomus would live on to help repel numerous other attacks, until the city was eventually overrun by goblins several years later. During the final siege, the dwarves took refuge in the barracks on the third floor of the castle, as the goblins ran up and down the streets slaughtering anyone who couldn't make it inside. What was left of the military tried to hold off the attackers but they eventually breached the castle and made their way upstairs. Tulon Oltartomus died defending the last citizens of Darkmoon from the goblin onslaught. But her valor and heroism were immortalized by the artful reverence of Darkmoon's dwarves, whose engravings would pass the knowledge of Tulon Oltartomus on to those who later visited the ruined city.

TLDR: My cat got gutted by goblins and spent the rest of her life dragging her bowels around behind her as she walked all over my city. Her guts extended for two tiles behind her, and she lived happily ever after until the city was destroyed by goblins.

Thank you Toady for adding this much... detail.

Would you mind posting the history of said cat from Legends mode? It sounds interesting.

Unfortunately Tulon Oltartomus's dimension no longer exists, and the latest backup I have of that game is from several years before she was even given a name. When the city was destroyed I wiped the save, updated DF to a new version, and started anew. Obviously many of her achievements are exaggerated, she did take part in most of the major battles, she scratched an ogre at one point, and she battled a forgotten beast. The cat really did seem to gravitate to wherever the action was.

Don't get multiple of Tulon. Otherwise we'll end up with...

B) Warrior Cats.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Interesting tale.

It occured to me that we may just have been given the final clue to understand just how big a single tile in dwarf fortress is.

We know that a cat's guts, if uncoiled, will trail 2 tiles.  (Assuming Tulon wasn't holding some back for a rainy day.)

Cats exist in real life.  Therefore their gut length can be learnt.

Algebra would suggest that half a cat's guts length is equal to one tile length.

One wikipedia search or one trip to court for animal cruelty, and I'll have the answer!

Okay, that was an epic gigantic cat. I feel sad for it though. It looks like I don't mind when dwarves die, but when cats do I feel uneasy.

One problem before you go vivisect a cat.  The guts of anything will take up two tiles.  This ranges from a dragon to a kobold, so you still run into the problem of "99 dragon's guts can take up two tiles as long as they're all lying down".
