Suicidal caravan escort
« on: June 13, 2008, 09:50:00 pm »

One of the pack animals in the dwarven caravan got noticed by a fire imp, who in turn got noticed by the animal's hammerdwarf escort. The hammerdwarf takes one swing and sends the imp flying back into the caldera...and then dives in after it. Naturally he spent the rest of his brief life drowning before burning to death. There were no other enemies in the area, and his pal following a bit behind did not dive in (though he did briefly lie down next to the edge, I think). Sadly I don't have a save. Still, this was so bizarre that I thought it was worth reporting.

I can't help but imagine that the other guard lied down to peek over the edge and shout, "Are you all right?" Before shrugging and going back to doing... whatever caravan guards do.

The only thing I can think of (if the imp was far from him) is that he dodged the imp's fireball. Dodging kills often more than direct attacks. There should be some option "don't dodge in unsafe direction" in combat settings by default ON.

However, the video of the Titan I linked to has the same problem. The titan didn't dodge any attack. I am pretty sure they are related.

Yeah, the titan attack looks kinda similar.

The dwarf couldn't have been dodging a fireball as the imp fell down 1 Z-level after getting knocked into the caldera, and imps don't throw fireballs across Z-levels. It really looks to me like the dwarf simply was chasing after his target (as creatures are wont to do after knocking things through the air) and forgot to stop chasing when he hit the edge of the caldera.

Indeed, I think the guard just got caught up in the moment and didn't stop to think that following his target might not be such a great idea.

This does give me an idea for a [PURSUE_UNTIL_DEATH] tag, though.
