Cleaning labor triggers Architecture job

I set an idling farmer to do Cleaning as well: he immediately started working on my road-in-progress.

Do roads even use architecture?  I was pretty sure roads were just masonry, not architecture.

Did that dwarf have masonry on?

If all the material and the original foundation has been laid, a road can be built by anyone, apparently.

I should have given more details: he was set to farming (fields) only, and was idling because the growing season had pretty much ended.  The road was half-built and construction was inactive.  Some of my other dwarves had cleaning selected (along with other labors), but none of them did roadwork.

For some reason Cleaning triggered roadbuilding for this one particular dwarf.  I have my suspicions it's an indexing problem, since Cleaning comes right before Architecture on the labors list.

Bridges require architecture & masonry, but I'm pretty sure roads just require architecture.

Grimm already answered your question. Road construction doesn't fall under any job categories after the initial architecture phase. Any idle dwarf will go do it, even if they have no jobs allowed on the labor screen.
