So I have a beautiful fortress, for once not tantrum spiralling, la-dee-da kobold thieves getting pwned by my dogs...

And then the game freezes for a moment, all the visible water goes to ice, "oh crap there goes the emergency drink", and then when the game unfreezes the water's liquid again. Something in my head triggers a check of the current date, and it's 15th Opal. Mid-winter almost EXACTLY... so why did the water freeze for just a moment? Has anyone else seen this kind of thing? I embarked in a temperate and warm combined biome, would that affect the freezing times?

Perhaps it only reaches the temperture required for water to freeze for several seconds, and due to tghe way it's calculated, it flash freezes?

I've seen that in a fort I'm running now. It doesn't happen every year, but sometimes it'll flash-freeze for a day or two in mid-winter.

Yeah, I've had flash freezes in the past. Other than the annoying lag they cause, there's not really much difference to them.

I was hoping to get a flash thaw in my current fortress. But, alas, the snow thaws for summer, but the river does not.

there is the problem of it flash-freezing with a dwarf on a tile with water... cries of "Urist McUnfortunate has been encased in ice!" will be heard.
