I know it sounds weird asking for 'challenges' especially for DF!

Not at all! Here are some suggestions.

A great part of this game is setting your own challenges, and difficulty as you see fit. Defending without walling in or using traps? Megaprojects? DIY embarks? Terrifying glacier embarks? Breaching hell? Utopian societies? Interesting stories about rampant mountain goat attacks?

Mostly it's just finding what you enjoy.

Mine out a 3 z level high tomb hall with holes in the walls for the sarcophages, then try and let a waterfall run through it. Forgot that water could travel diagonally and didn't properly construct the pumpstack, resulting in my tomb flooding.  :P
Was fun rebuilding the pump system to get the water pumped out fast enough so i could place the missing floodgate and link it to a lever. Had to dig a maintenance tunnel around the tomb to reach the pumpstack, since the walkways along the walls of the tomb got flooded pretty quickly. Luckily the water didn't come further than the tomb...  :)

I'll savescum, but only in some situations. If someone falls down a well or loses an arm in a battle I just keep playing, but if a goblin siege accidentally gets through a newly-dug water pipe that wasn't filled up yet and kills my whole fortress, I might reload just because there's no fun starting over a whole fortress just when you're getting to the funnest part because of one dumb mistake.

Wow another round of great replies. I must say the DF community is the best around. Thanks again everyone. Between Mario Kart Wii (with my fiancee), DF and work I have very little time to do much else!
