Somewhat newish player, just need small info about world gen
« on: November 11, 2010, 06:29:55 pm »

ok so I always hear about people picking the ideal spot for embarks.

mostly a magma pipe, or some form of magma; a nice river, HSF, underground river's ect

is there anything i missed? what's ideal for you?

Now my question is, how do you know your place has those before you embark?  Now i've read a lot of tutorials, downloaded the lazy newb pack.  (BTW i never get attacked, i've never seen a goblin and i been playing for years, and i even did some tutorials loading up there saves using different versions and same thing :(  I want WAR!!)

when do you get attacked anyhow? is it after a few years, i know it's random but yeah...

OK So back to my question. I have perfect world/df hack/runesmith, along with a bunch of other programs but i don't think they have anything to do with world editing (like stonesense and dwarftherapist).  So how do i know i have the perfect embark location?

I am playing with 31.16, is there any other version you guys reccomend over this one? i heard this one is actually kind of buggy right now an some players been saying to use 31.12, or go back to 28.40d.

Thanks for the help, so far i been starting with 7 dwarfs and a crap load of dogs to be turned into wardogs.  who needs an army when you got 30 wardogs breeding like crazy :D.  All i need is my one military leader to lead the dogs outside =D

Magma pipe (AKA: volcano) is nice because it allows for surface magma. All maps have magma seas, which are found by digging below the last cavern layer.

HFS (not HSF), is a spoiler, stands for "happy fun stuff" and
Spoiler: Warning!!!! (click to show/hide)
(HFS basically means you "dug too deep", as it was in the old versions. If you know Lord of the Rings, the equivalent of Balrogs)
All maps have HFS.

If I recall correctly, there are no more underground rivers after 28.40d.

Also note: flux stone, it allows you to make steel.

As for attacks, they come after a certain population is hit (or created wealth or import/export, I think). You have to have neighboring civilizations that you are at war with (typically: Goblins).

Best version varies on player. I like the new ones a lot. (Note: 31.17 is out)

The "perfect" embark is totally up to your standards. My "perfect embark" is volcano, flux, sand, and a freezing/cold biome. Always liked snow on my dwarven maps.

Lastly, DF Magma Wiki is the best resource.
Else, we on the forums will continually provide help. Ask questions if you need to.
Thanks,
TGL

At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Thanks a lot, seriously this is the nicest forums i've seen in a long time.  makes this game so damn fun.  plus i love my wardogs, i need to get warcats though...

also why can't i have my dwarves mount weapons onto the dogs like on there back a spear.  so that way they could run into enemies and poke um... oh well, guess i'll just have to retrofit there teeth with steel :D

oh and yes, how would i know for example, if i have magma in my area to embark on?

Well, basically you can just pause the game and quickly scan the surface.  If there's magma there you'll find it.  If you're talking about any magma, not just surface magma, its there unless you screwed up the world gen in a way which I don't know if its even possible.  In a vanilla world-gen, there IS magma.  Just keep digging down.... might be 50+ z-levels but it'll be there.

Ok new question cause i'm figuring this out.

when i do an advance parameter, so far i made a small region with double the titans, megabeast, and semimegabeast

but it starts in the year 500, can i make this start at 250? and if so which setting is it?

Also what are seeds?

And what is the best year to start in? what differences does it truly make other than history? i like to start in 125 when i just do a normal game but i never got attacked so :(

i think it's cause it was loadin the lazy newb pack which has no titans or anything.

if i go to load parameters on an advance (like say small region) then go to create a world from the main menu, will it use those settings?

Awsome i figured out my history question already

so i have a new question haha,  what's the point of a small-to large map, when in the end you are embarking in a 4x4 or 5x5 or whatever you set.

why have so much there that you can't see?

4x4 is a plenty of rock.  The larger the area the more it will tend to lag as the game goes on.  The default used to be 6x6 before more things were added.  4x4 was wiser then too.

It might be worth changing the size and shape of the embark to include a river or different type of rock.

Ahh yes yes, but i ment what is the difference of a small world, to a large world? other than the obvious you have more places to choose from.  But if you have a 4x4 embark, in a small world; how would that be different with a 4x4 embark in a large world?

cause in the end you are still just inside a 4x4.

My 'perfect' embark changes depending on what I want at the time, but I'm really not as obsessive of 'perfection' as most. Last embark I wanted running water, evil predators and the full three-ring circus to dig up, and I got more Fun than I expected. This time I wanted warm climate, ready magma, savage wildlife, and I got more bonuses than I expected. Next time I'll want something different.

Not sure how to do it on the interface myself, but I edit the data/init/world_gen.txt file and load that in the advanced screen.

Set the line named [END_YEAR:500] to [END_YEAR:250] or whatever, 150 works well for me on most maps, goblins and other races have issues with dying out if the world runs too long.

Here is the entry I am using on my current map, copied it from another thread here on the forums. Loaded with volcanos. Currently playing a 4x4 area with a low volcano, flux, a river, and sand. It's in a calm area so wildlife doesn't bother me much.
