New Computer
« on: November 11, 2010, 11:20:50 am »

So, in ~2 weeks I'm getting a new computer- TV hard drive, six gigs of ram, high-end nehalem processor. I'm gonna install linux to save on OS overhead, making this by far the fanciest computer I've ever owned (my current model has 1/12 the RAM and a processor that seemed nice seven years ago).

Of course, the first thing I'm gonna do to put this cybertechnical beast through it's paces is play Dwarf Fortress. To pass the long hours while I wait for it's arrival, I figured I'd ask you fine folk: First, how big a fort will those stats be able to run at reasonable FPS (Dwarf numbers, liquid flows) and secondly, what should I do with my first reasonably powered fortress, to do glory to Armok, Myself, and my New Machine?

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

Dwarf fortress goes so crazy with different things happening I have no idea. I experience a few seconds of lag only when ice melts, and never saw the point of huge dwarf-made rivers of super-power.

Though if I were to suggest a megaproject to try to bring this to it's knees, make a giant fortress-covering waterfall. Pump water up to a floor above the entire fortress, and push the water to all edges of the map to create walls of water. As an added bonus, make a lever that opens up one side for caravans to come through. another added bonus for enough water in flowing reservoirs to cripple your system.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

I'm using a quad-core (3.3 Ghz), 8 gigs RAM, W7-64, TB drive. I'm at about 150 dwarves, have a major river pierced and utilized all over the place, pumping magma hither and yon, and I'm still holding at about 40 FPS even with all these frigging cats that adopt dorfs before I can butcher them. Enjoy your new setup!
