I didn't know this could happen in fortress mode until now!

What does it mean?

Most likely it just means "it is now year X" .. if it affects how civilizations and megabeasts act I have no idea.

For the moment think of it as this: your fortress just became LEGENDARY  8)

Did you kill a megabeast? The 'age' is related to how many are left alive. Other than that, it means nothing and changes nothing.

It means your world has passed into a new age; namely the age of legends. I'm not 100% sure what the age of legends is related to but I think it's related to low amounts of Megabeasts and a high amount of people in the world.

Prepostedit: Ninja'd somewhat.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

I believe it has to do with the amount of cheese in celestial alignment with the 3rd moon when it is in its 'new moon' phase.

Also megabeasts.

I've killed a cyclops, 2 titans, and one FB.  I have another FB milling harmlessly around.  The era change happened well after the last death, tho, and not at the start of the year, oddly.

Everyone SURE stuff isn't happening outside the fort in fort mode?

The era changes at the next decade mark after the % population changes. You must have genned a tiny world if that's all it took for an era change.

The age depends on a number of things (such as megabeasts left alive).

For example if you've only got a single dragon left alive and he's terrorizing everything you might be in the age of the dragon. If there's a demon and the dragon it might be the age of dragon and demon. Most (all?) civilizations are destroyed? age of death. Pretty much every living thing dead? age of emptiness. There's alot more but I don't remember them offhand.

It's a shame that pretty much the only thing anyone sees is age of legends. You pretty much need pocket worlds or run worldgen for a really, really long time to get anything else.

Check this link. It's not up to date but at least it explains something.

EDIT: Also this topic explains a lot http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=45820.0

I sometimes wonder considering the occasional appearance of random friendly humans and dwarves who briefly visit the map and then leave.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

I've gotten to age of heroes, after a long and determined adventuring career. Not sure why it's such a shame, though. Age of Legends is richest in challenges, the later ages have no character beyond the names. It would be different if the world developed beyond worldgen, but that's something to look forward to in later releases, which may not be compatible with the worlds we're playing.

Age of Legends? Is that the same thing as Age of Myth? That's what I always seem to wind up with.

Sorry, got those confused. I meant Age of Myth, when you're starting with a fresh worldgen and most the mega/semi populations are still active, and people aren't dying of old age left and right.
