My MultiBURB game had a rather freeform system, but my methods of keeping data stored were horrendus. I'm actually thinking about making a live game out of it, like some kind of Imp Defense. However, the battle mechanics.

While out of battle, it's more-or-less anything goes. So long as it's not crazy and doesn't contradict what the GM says, it's good.

Battle is also rather freeform, but relies on what Echeladders the player took and what weapons lie in their Strife Deck.  All battles are resolved with d8s.

For the vast majority of attacks, both the attacker and defender roll 1d8 and compare results. If the defender's is higher, or there's a tie, then nothing happens. If the attacker's is higher, he/she lands a blow. This is just rolling 1d8, applying any modifiers and taking the result off the target's Hp.

For certain other effects, a larger roll means a more powerful effect. So, a Sleeping ability that got a 1 would put the target asleep for one turn, while somehow getting an 11 would probably leave more than enough time for the kills.

Skills are freeform-if it's sensible and relates to your Echeladder, it's good to go.

Whew, added all those ideas Sean wrote into the OP. I probably should have reserved a second post, that thing could bloat fast. I'm sure we still have room though, and if it DOES overflow (not soon) I'll launch a new thread and reserve a few posts so I don't repeat my mistake.

I can't really figure out how to make a fighting system that's interesting though. By its very nature it's "SHOOT GUNS", "SHOOT MISSILES" or "BARRELROLL".

Can anyone point out an RTD that did this succesfully, or offer some help?

Interesting terrain could do wonders for this sort of thing, throw in some asteroids, debris fields, and such and you might be able to do something with that.

Well, the mafia game isn't so much in a traditional role-playing game (the game is performed by voting rather than freeform actions) but it certainly is a point. Also I'd totally like to start a Mafia game where nobody is a Mafia.

Anyway Dwarmin, I'm guessing you want to focus on fighting? It wouldn't be hard to make combat really simple if you're going to spend most of your time on the ground. Otherwise I'm not sure- the main thing that makes fighting in a flying vehicle interesting is movement, which is a huge downer in play-by-post games. Maybe you could make a lot of different weapons/countermeasures? Maybe more feasible would be for players to pilot larger, turreted ships and have movement abstracted out entirely, instead more or less whacking enemies until someone dies, but it certainly lacks the glamor of fighter piloting.

I really like Sean's Robot Adventure-idea. That should be done.

I don't have many ideas right now, though; a village defense game I've made a basic system and the map for, and multiplayer combat game in a big, trap-filled arena. Players would level up and gain better weapons, better armor, allies and such. Probably killstreak bonuses and stuff as well.

But eh, the 40k combat system I usually use might be a bit too simple for these.
