You can edit the keybindings from the escape menu.  I believe Toady changed the spacebar's default function for a purpose relating to the new military screens.

yeah, sometimes you need to use space to put a blank character between words.

Also the squad menu doesn't pause the game, so you use space to pause/unpause the game while moving your squads and esc to back out of the menu.

Which is stupid, because squads are probably the last thing I want to be changing around with the game unpaused.

I used the keybindings to make space pause and shift+space make a space in the text entry screens. It's still stupid, but it's the best I can come up with.

You could also just continue to use esc. It becomes habit pretty quickly.

Yeah, I remember completely *hating* how Toady changed it when DF2010 first came out.  Nowadays I don't even think about it.  I think it takes a week or two to get over it.

The new Microsoft Office ("new" meaning after Office 2003) , on the other hand, I absolutely can't get the hang of.

Except I don't like pressing Escape that often.

Also I haven't got used to the "new" Microsoft Office either. To this day it still always takes me at least a minute to figure out how to make my paper double-spaced.

Thanks guys! Its puzzling to me that it does not pause the game when you go into the military squad menus. Seems like a silly design decision.

I remapped it to F12, because I got REALLY tired of Esc-hammering myself into the game's options menu when I was backing out of a Q-v-D-#-somersault menu. So now I end up at the main screen with F12 as being the Options menu.
Maybe if you remap that key, you will be less frustrated? It sure helped me.

Well, if I remap it to space....how will that affect things?

That's the beauty of remapping keys, you can change it to whatever works for you.

Be warned, if you change it back to spacebar you won't be able to type a space character in the job manager to find specific jobs.

Aye, that's why you change the "space" text-entry key to something like shift+space.

Found it, it's keybindings -> Text Entry -> character 032.

Still better than reaching over to the Esc button.

When DF2010 first came out, it annoyed me having to hit Esc. Nowadays, it doesn't bother me the slightest. If you want, remap the keys, but you could also just go with Esc, and you'll get used to it eventually.
