Wording Consistancy
« on: June 03, 2008, 09:34:00 pm »

A smoothed  floor of most stone is called a "Smooth Floor" i.e. "Smooth Slate Floor," but if its a colored stone its simply called a "Floor" i.e. "Orthoclase Floor."  I can't think of a particularly good reason for this, it just seems like an oversight.

EDIT: Further investigation reveals this to be a conflict between stone that occurs in layers and stone that occurs as clusters within the layers (ores and jems too).  I still can't think of a particularly good reason for it though.

He he he, this was a really old one, it seems.  Way back when, before 3D, when the map was stored as ASCII + color rather than specific map tiles, it checked for "+" to see if the floor was smooth.  Now there are four different kinds of smooth tiles, and the cluster/layer distinction is part of that (if it's a cluster, it knows it has to check through the cluster information rather than just pulling the layer for the stone type).  Anyway, apparently it was still checking for "+" to see if it should print the word smooth, and the "+" has the same integer value as the smooth tile corresponding to layered rock.  Fixed for next time.

It's funny how the most inconsequential bugs seem to have the most convoluted causes. Hearing things like these make me really want to take a peek at DF's source code. Not that I would understand any of it at all.  ;)
