Dwarves don't notices all this pus and vomit floating around in the bottom of the well.

I once had a miner go into the (partially filled) well basin to clean up some ramps that were bothing me. He cut off his own exit and channeled the floor out from under himself, drowning before I could extract him. His friends got bad thoughts as his body decomposed, but nobody ever cared that there was some body looking up at them from the well.

TBH, I think that all dwarf fortress problem solving falls either on the "Rube Goldberg" method, or the "pharaonic" one.
{Unicorns} produce more bones if the werewolf rips them apart before they die.

Urist McDeadguy:  We all float down here!  And when you're down here, you'll float too!
Urist McThirsty: ... Yeah, whatever (glug glug glug)

How do you make a dwarf float?

One glass of root beer, two scoops of dwarf!

Sounds good enough to try. Think I'm gonna set up a similar trench, but with pumps cycling the water to filter out the blood instead of using dfclean. Has the added benefit of creating a neat little waterfall curtain in the entrance to improve the disposition of my dorfs as they go for a snack/drink/party. "Leave your troubles at the door" indeed.
