How is babby formed?

Given how surprised most dwarven mothers seem to be (the baby basically suddenly falls down from them without any sign that the person was pregnant whatsoever, then they move a few steps, notice something strange behind them making noises, turn around and go seek the source ...), I think the theory of them growing in the mothers' beards and being mistaken for yet another mold or the remains of last year's birthday dinner until they suddenly become aliver than the rest of the beard has some merit ...
