So, according to the wiki to properly remove engravings from contructed floor tiles I have to do the following:
  • Remove engraved constructed floor tile.
  • Build a wall on the tile.
  • Carve fortifications into the wall tile.
  • Remove fortification.
  • Rebuild floor tile.
And I'll end up with a fresh un-engraved constructed floor tile.

However, on a whim I tried to simplify by doing the following:
  • Build fortification on top of engraved constructed tile.
  • Remove both fortification and engraved floor tile with one command.
  • Rebuild floor tile.

…and it worked!
I got a clean floor tile and was able to engrave it again. I did this several times in order to get a masterwork engraving on that tile.

But before I went ahead and edited the wiki with this newfound knowledge I decided to do some !!SCIENCE!! and replicate this on a new embark…

…and it didn't work anymore! The old engraving reappeared on the constructed floor tile.

Stumped, I tried again using different materials (and combination of materials w.r.t. floor and wall) on different locations and got mixed results. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I even discovered that regular constructed wall tiles can work too, but I am so far unable to figure out exactly why it wouldn't work in some cases for either walls/fortification.

Edit: in the cases where simply building a fortification didn't work, building a wall on top of the engraved tile without removing it first and then carving fortifications into it did work.

Anyway, just putting this out here in case anybody wants to try it out themselves. I'll keep doing some !!SCIENCE!! to see if I can figure out exactly what conditions would allow the removal of engravings from constructed floors without going through so many steps.
