Filling in ponds.
« on: October 28, 2010, 12:53:20 pm »

Lemme guess, just drain it and build a wall inside of it?

Next question is if I mine out ALL the ice, will it melt and refill in spring?

I've never tried it, but I have heard that if you mine out the ice from a pond it will cause it to sop refilling for some reason. I guess, similar to how if you mine out the ice on a brook (it destroys the brook tile). I could be wrong here though, since this is just hearsay.

Mining out all the ice will empty your pond, but it won't destroy the underlying mechanism that causes it to fill up when it rains, so as soon as the pond unfreezes it will be empty (the ice floor might leave 1/7 water when it melts, I can't remember, but it doesn't matter because dwarves can build in 1/7 water), but then the rain will fill it back up again. I do this all the time to get ice to build houses and things. I love ice.

If you wanted to be really tricky and defy nature you could use the ice you mine out to build walls inside the pond, which would then stay around all year (your goal is to "fill in" the pond, not just permanently empty it, right?). Also, I'm pretty sure that if you build walls in there it will destroy the "murky pool" tiles on the bottom of the pond, so it won't ever fill up again even if you remove the walls. If you want your pool to retain its water-collecting function you should just build floors over to top of it.

Proper application of magma will also fill your pond with obsidian. Use with caution glee.

ice always leaves 7/7 water, even if it was frozen from 1/7 water.

Basically my super-wall cuts right through a few natural ponds so I've dug out the ice, installed walls as a foundation, and will build as originally planned.

If you mine ramps in the ice does it replace the murky pool tile with an ice ramp tile?
