Well prospering 12 year old fort. I have noticed a peculiar behavior. I keep churning out "brew drink" orders. The alcohol stocks go up as expected. Yet it appears I never run out of barrels. My carpenter has not made a single barrel in 2 years now. I have not tracked this carefully using stocks screen thou.

Is this normal? Do dwarves recycle barrels?

Dwarves do recycle barrels.

I would say that you are using your booze for cooking? Keep an eye on your booze supplies to make sure that the cook doesn't use up all of it at some point.

If the consumption of alchohol is greater than the production, you'll never run out of barrels.

If it's less than the production, then you should eventually run out, assuming you don't run out of something else first.

With a large fortress I find that 2-3 stills is usually enough to keep up with the booze consumption.

Once I get around 2,000 barrels I have enough, and the barrels get drunk dry before being refilled, and they keep being recycled again and again.

One still is enough if you have a dedicated, skilled brewer. He needs to be doing it constantly, but you should just skim alcohol-bankruptcy by the time he wakes up. No interruptions allowed.
