EMPTY volcano
« on: January 24, 2011, 08:23:17 pm »

So recently, my computer has been making glitchier and glitchier worlds, now its at the point where it takes 500+ rejects to find a suitable one, and even then every other tile is glitched. I've finally been able to embark on one of the worlds, a volcano, flux, obsidian, sand, a stream... Well, I look around, and it's nice... then I see this empty spot, zoom up and down.. it's the volcano!! But without obsidian walls, then it hit me, IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NO MAGMA. A giant 100z pit of sparta (to certain doom) now exists in DF. (BTW, because it's glitched, you can see all 3 caverns and the magma sea!)

Save:http://www.mediafire.com/?vgk3hph2k8zdtvu (But be warned, it's an FPS killer.)

Large update: I tried a different spot, and the same thing happened, I predict every single one of the 100+ volcanoes on the map is glitched like this... have fun with the save!

Do you have HFS turned off? That causes it.

Yes, I have HFS turned off (for more space to build), but the magma layer is on, I thought that would still keep volcanoes full.

Nope! Nobody is really sure why, but no HFS == no volcanos.

You will have FUN.  Hidden or not.

That being said, this would be an epic site for a megaproject.

Hmm, I guess that the reason hell exists is to power the adamantine pipes, which act as pumps, and keep the magma sea/volcanoes filled [/WMG]

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

Better yet! Build the entire fortress IN the chasm!

Drop prisoners (and puppies and kitties) into the pit until most of the bottom layer is covered with corpses and body parts.  Cast the bottom layer as obsidian.

Repeat for each layer.  (you can add several creatures to a cage then link via lever to do mass pitting)

Carve away the rest of the volcano, leaving a macabre spire made of corpses and stone, the outsides smoothed and engraved with images of falling creatures.

Dig out the rest of the entire mountain and embark flat, then for the top layer, station your entire population on the top.  Fill the top with 3/7 water.  Using a water tower as a timer, time it so the pump assembly, access staircase, and a layer of magma collapse, simultaneously casting each member of your fortress in obsidian, and destroying any visible apparatus for the construction of the spire.

Basically imitate the pillar of flesh from Eternal Darkness

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I had a fortress like this once, I can say from experience that having a set of bridges at the top that you use to drop invaders many z-levels to their doom is extremely satisfying.  Doing it so that they will fall by the trade depot (which is suspended over the magma as well) is quite good as well.
