Architect won't architect?
« on: October 24, 2010, 06:44:14 pm »

I've found magma and have the location of a magma smelter set up.  I've got the building designated but tends to stay "construction inactive" for quite awhile while it waits for an architect.  My architect has the labor enabled, can reach the location just fine, and is sitting around with "no job".  I enabled the furnace operation labor for him just in case but that doesn't seem to help either.  My architect is perfectly fine to haul stuff when I enable those labors, but when I disable hauling and everything but architect and furnace operating he won't build the smelter.

EDIT: nevermind.  He cannot reach the location just fine.  He managed to wall himself somewhere by standing on the wrong side of the wall.  Would also explain why my outpost liason isn't doing anything.  Seriously... can I choose a new expedition leader if he dies?  I've designated a new zero-tolerance policy for stupidity resulting to death and I want to know if he's expendable.

Try disabling the labors, unpausing, then re-enabling them. This seems to work for me.

Try setting him to a burrow with just the smelter.
But remember to remove the burrow afterwards, or he'll starve.

Read edit ^

I'm surprised a zombie magma crab didn't find its way up the passage and kill him.

Well, he's starving and dehydrated, I wonder if he'll live long enough to reach the stockpiles...

Dwarves are very prone to self-immurement, yes.  It's a good idea to set up fake walls on the side(s) you don't want them standing (ie. designate them to be built and suspend them).  Or you can chain them to the wall and drop in a few kegs of Dwarven wine for comedy effect.

If your expedition leader dies another one will be automatically appointed.
