Opium was also used for the same reasons.  In DF, I always figured my doctors used the Valley Herbs/golden salve for something related to this, even if it's not outright included in the process.

Nah, dwarves are hardcore. They just look on it as punishment for letting themselves get injured :D

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
