Lazy lazy wood cutter.
« on: October 22, 2010, 09:01:42 pm »

I started a new fort and got to craving out the inside. I built a workshop so i could makes beds, doors, and barrels for my fort. So, when i got to it, i ordered a few beds to be made, but, i got this message a few seconds later.

Urist McWoodmaker cancels make beds: No wood
(Ok his name wasn't that but you get the idea.)

I was somewhat suprised by this. I had a wood stockpile and a wood cutter, i even selected the wood i wanted to have cut. A short check to the cutting area shows that none of the trees i wanted cut down were cut down. I got no wood, could't make beds or doors, all the dwarfs are killed at night by wolfs. (It was doomed anyway, the place i wanted to get muddy in order for a farm was flooded and i couldn't get the water to stop.) Seeing that i could find no other reason for this, i have come to the anwser that my woodcutter is lazy. Is there a another reason of this?

Do you have an axe? If your woodcutter has no axe, they can't cut wood.

Is your woodcutter's woodcutting labor activated? If your woodcutter doesn't have woodcutting active, they won't cut wood.

Is your woodcutter holding an axe? Again, no axe, no woodcutting.

Is your woodcutter part of a military squad? This can sometimes/often cause woodcutters to drop their axe and not pick it up again, making it impossible for them to cut wood.

Did you embark with woodcutting active on your woodcutter, but with no axe? If you make an axe after embarkation, the "Pickup Equipment" job sometimes won't trigger properly, so you have to disable the woodcutting labor, unpause for a bit, then reactivate it to force them to pick up the axe.

Could your woodcutter reach the area to have wood cut? If they can't get to the trees, they won't cut wood.

Is your woodcutter alive? Dead dwarves don't do diddly.

Am I the only one with enough self-discipline to only read a TV tropes article description and then go back to what I was doing if I was busy?

Are you using Dwarf Therapist to tell the dwarf that he's a woodcutter? Some previous versions of DT didn't trigger the pickup equipment jobs properly, so you may want to set this labor ingame. v-p-l-scrollscrollscroll-enter.

Is there a path between your dwarf and the trees? Did your flood cut off the dwarf from the outside world or from the cavern that you want to clean of trees? If the dwarf can't reach the tree, he won't cut it down.

Have you got about a billion dump item (d-b-d) jobs queued up? Has your woodcutter hauling labours enabled? He might be busy carring rock #1425463224 right now and hence he's a bit too distracted to cut down a tree.

If your dwarf is both a lumberjack AND a plant gatherer; or a lumberjack AND a fisherdwarf, he won't ever cut a tree, because the other two jobs take precedence over all other things.

Hey, I have this sort of problem, except I've taken care of all these problems and these idiots will cut up trees on the surface but NOT those growing in front of my floodgates.
Though I'll check the part where my lumberjacks may also be plant gatherers and fisherdwarfs...
