Hmm, yesterday in .31.12, I was able to activate the barony meeting by delaying the meeting until all of the merchants had unpacked- is that the only requirement, that they make it to your depot safely?  Goblins were sieging at the same time, though, maybe that somehow affected it?

This fortress is turning into some kind of supervillain lair or something.
You do remember that you've been farming gigantic wingless dragon-fish for profit and Fun, right?

It is odd that my last fort was a terrible disaster, half the population dying to skeletal walrus waves and barely into the 2nd year - got the offer to become a barony - yet my elaborate awesome forts of 10+years never get a barony.

This fort that became a barony - had about 20 odd dwarfs, I had exported alot of gold items so my exports were probably over 10k, but thats not high. I had very little roads or any major digging underway, no adamantine mined out, though I had discovered it.

I think I definately spoke to the liason after the caravan had departed/or unpacked, (cant remember now lost the save)

My latest fort of 5 odd years going well. I've tried this again speaking to the liason after the caravan has departed, but it hasnt worked - pretty sure this one meets the requirements on the wiki and most of what I've read here. So its really seems hit and miss to me.

I just tried the "lock the mayor in his room until the caravan leaves" method and it totally worked.

Well, it isn't working for me. I'm running 31.16.

I've got the mayor locked in his room, with a locked airlock just to be sure Urist McDiplomat doesn't get anywhere near Urist McMayor. No problem here.

My problem is that the caravan just won't leave. I get the "Merchants from UristLand have embarked on their journey" message, but they just sit on their asses while in the depot.

Any ideas on why this is happening, or what should I do to get a baron?

I think they're just packing up their things.  It just says that so you'll know you can't trade with them anymore.  They should leave after a little while.

The "lock him in his room until the caravan goes away" is still working perfectly fine for me (and not working when I don't do it) in 31.16

More than two (in-game) weeks just to pack their stuff? I don't think so.

I wouldn't be too surprised.  Either that, or they're locked in.

People have reported it taking months.  It may be programmed as a (hopefully efficient) version of storing items in bins in a stockpile: the code goes through every item one by one.  You can help speed it up by reducing the number of loose items you trade next time, and aiming for full bins.

If you're unsure whether movement is really happening, hit "t" and look at the items in the depot.  Take note of what the bottommost listings are.  Let a few moments pass, then look again.  Those very last ones will have been moved onto a pack animal.  (Or it could be the very top, I forget.)

Loading up takes longer if you trade individual items instead of bins.  Also, me (and Mirq's) workaround still works in 0.31.16...let's hope its fixed going forward.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

Also, no word on the other nobles.  I've heard the Dungeon Master will arrive in this release, but I believe it's just a rumor.

Hm, good point. So I can trade nothing at all in order to speed up the process. Gotta try this on the next trading season.
