Melting Brass Chests
« on: October 21, 2010, 05:40:51 am »

My first time playing a volcano and I have an awesome metal industry going. There's a few leftover items from before my Blacksmiths hit Legendary. I've been able to melt all of them except for the brass chests. The furnace operators will take them to the smelter, work until they get hungry, thirsty, or sleepy, go take the appropriate break, return and start all over, but the item never gets melted. I have hundreds of these things and I would love to be able to melt them. Any ideas?

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

Won't magma just destroy them? I'm not worried about destroying them, as I can always atom smash. I'm out of zinc and I would love to be able to reclaim over 100 brass.

Are there any bugs about melting chests? I've even checked to make sure there's no items inside.

If you throw them into magma, they should melt into "molten brass", which you could try melting into a bar.

It'd be a pain and there's no guarantee it'll work any better, but it's worth a shot, right?

You could temporarily set your dwarves to SPEED:0 in the raws, and after getting them to melt the chest go back to normal speed.  Its cheating, but only a little.  8)

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

I don't think the unmelting metallic chest bug got fixed. I've seen the same thing reported for a variety of said chests in the past.
