Yay! Dwarf Fortress! But...
« on: October 20, 2010, 02:56:56 pm »

Yea, i just got dwarf fortress, and started making a world! The only thing, i'm still waiting. I choose to make everything "extra large" (Expect beasts and savages) and choose the history "extra long", and its taking an age. How long do I have to wait?

Edit: It just finished. 1050 years  ::).

Yeah, by default, the world generation lasts until either 20% of the megabeasts are dead, or 1050 years. Megabeasts rarely, if ever, actually die during world generation anymore due to how much tougher each one of them is compared to the versions prior to April 1st, 2010 (the 40d series and before; the series after that date are called 31.x or DF2010), so it almost always goes to the maximum length.

You can, through the "Design New World with Advanced Parameters" option from the main menu, create a world that will stop earlier. It's a very, very good idea, in fact, since each consecutive year tends to take longer than all the previous ones due to more historical figures the game has to track.

The feature is now available in a limited form in the basic world-creation screen, as the poster noted with the "extra long" history.

Also, I like ages over a thousand.  The thousand years for newborn dragons to reach adulthood gets my attention.  Since you can always go and do something else during (lengthy) world generation, the real concern is whether the extra time ruins anything for you, like giving civilizations more time to kill themselves off.

Sounds like you're playing 0.31.13.  The default world gen length in the latest version is 250 years, not 1050 years.  I'd strongly recommend upgrading to get those other bug fixes as well (or downgrading to .12 if that's your preference).

Wait.. World gen stops by itself after a certain point? I always stop it manually at 100-150 or so.

You can specify the year to stop, along with a few other parameters for stoppage, in the worldgen settings.  You can make your world stop generating history at year 1 and go play if you really want.
