!!forest!!
« on: October 22, 2010, 11:11:48 am »

I managed to start a huge wildfire, and it's currently burnning through all my needed surface resources.  Including my wood stockpile (I mean, come on, REALLY?  The store room was half dug already!) and my dwarves can't move stuff out of the way fast enough.

Any ideas?

This is what happens when you play with Magma.

But, I'm afraid my only contribution is that water puts fire out.
Unfortunately though, it would be hard to pit/pond the surface.

If it's VERY early in the game.

Not a thingy dingy. Get your dwarves below ground before they start grabbing !!objects!! and kill themselves in the process.

Empty stockpile tiles acted as firebreaks in .40d, dunno if that still works. Otherwise, there's not a lot you can do except let it burn itself out and put some contingencies in place for the next big fire. How'd it start, anyway?

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

It started with a misplaced channel tile next to the magma pipe that sticks up 3 z-levels above the surface (and is the only part of the map that isn't Z108 at the surface).

And no, I just said it burnt through my stockpile of wood, so the tiles didn't stop it.

It got !!fun!! because a dwarf grabbed a !!Oak Log!! and ran through my fortress, and dropped it on the edge of the new wood stockpile.  Right next to a pile of booze too.  Kaboom.  It turns out, yes, booze can explode.  Fortunately, there was still plenty of booze even with that.  More fortunately, it didn't spread any farther.

I figured out I could channel out a firebreak, so I saved half the map...  until it spread around that single tile on the edge I couldn't dig out.  Oh crap.

The elves aren't going to be happy.

Makes me wish we had artificial means of starting fire, like dumping a bucket of magma into a pit.
You could use booze as explosives and set traps with it.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

He said an empty stockpile may still act as a firebreak.

If the fire can jump across one tile without fuel, and your firebreak is 3 tiles wide, then it cannot jump across it.  But if there's something flammable (i.e. logs) in the middle tile of the 3-tile section, then that won't stop the fire.  (note: I do not know if fire can jump across 1 empty tile, it's just an example)

If the empty stockpile trick no longer works, build dirt roads.  They require no skill, no materials, no tools (like channeled moats) and build fairly quickly.  Grass and stuff will eventually grow back, but the fire should be long gone by then.
