All art is the same!
« on: October 21, 2010, 05:11:21 pm »

I recently made a fort, and after a while i wanted statues to decorate the place. However, every statue was of the same event!

Same elf is on all figurine stone crafts & wall art also, except for the generic 'five-pointer star' and such. Bug? Also, my mason, engraver and stonecrafter are all different dwarves.

So let me get this straight.

3 of your dwarves having (I guess) about 150 years of history decide to constantly make art of an ELF?!

BURN THEM FOR HERESY!!!

PS. It would be acceptable if it stated "Masami Glosswave is being torn apart by the giant eagles" but it only says surrounded ;/. Disgusting.

I once flung a migrant off a bridge. He collided with the brook cliff and died.
A year later, my legendary engraver engraved him colliding with an obstacle and dying.

Better than six thousand years of dwarves fighting giant desert scorpions.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

I'm also somewhat less than amused by my engravers' artistic interests. There's just too much of some humans taming eagles. Fortunately my civ has some history of its own (even though it's mostly just ascensions to the throne and whatnot).

Same here. It's always something about giant eagles or travels of some human a few hundred years ago. Very rarely you get awesome ones like an alligator striking a threatening pose due to biting off a dwarf's first toe or depictions of a drowning mule.

In my latest fort I constantly get two images of a human being killed by a mountain titan about 50 years ago. One of the humans' surname was Blizzardlightning though, so it's forgiveable, he sounded badass.

My engraver/mayor is obsessed with some war between the humans and a bunch of jungle animals.
I mean, really, four fifths of my engravings are of a guy getting eaten by a jaguar/lion/elephant.
I want burning elves! Is that too much to ask for?

Yeah, dwarves have a bad habit of picking completely irrelevant historical events for their art. Above all, it seems, they pick events that happened in the region they embarked in. So if embark in a spot where elves and goblins had a war a couple hundred years ago, prepare to see a lot of dead elves and goblins on your walls.

HOWEVER, you can turn this bug/feature in your favour! Here's how.

1. Go in adventurer mode and find an easily accessable summit ( ^ sign on the world map)
2. Reach the summit. You'll get a message saying you're the first person to reach said summit.
3. Retire.
4. Go in Dwarf Fortress mode and embark in the same region as the summit, or even on the summit.
5. Watch as all your dwarves make images of your adventurer climbing the summit.
6. Unretire your adventurer and plunder the fort.
7. Amaze your enemies with your massive ego by parading around wearing images of yourself climbing some mountain!

EDIT:

Or, you could just grab a bunch of children prisoners from a dark fortress, bring them to your future embark spot, slaughter them all then throw yourself off a cliff. Your engravings will never be dull again.

"Strike the earth!"
"A section of the cavern has collapsed"
"Your fortress has crumbled to its end"
Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard
