My Militia captain was first on the scene. Where he quickly ran away. The rest of my soldiers eventually dealt with it.

He did you a favor with the cat kill, its great news.  For burials you can use a graveyard pile, this works like refuse but takes dwarves and pets instead.  Bodies here will rot (slapping owners/friends with another unhappy thought).

For the proper burial you need to build some coffins/sarcophagus (sarcophogi?).  I usually build a big room somewhere with a stack of coffins, hit q then as you highlight over each one you can toggle it to be used for burial and have the further option to allow/restrict pets.

Dont use the make a tomb option, that assigns the coffin as a possesion of a living dwarf, usually used for nobles

Also...you got off pretty lightly overall.  In the later game these tantrums can destroy your entire fortress through various Fun mechanisms.
