Appraiser skill

Is this skill supposed to raise at extremely high rates? It seems that after a three or four caravans, it gets bumped up to Legendary and can only go up from there.

It's probably not "supposed" to increase that quickly, but it does anyway. From the previous version's page on Experience, it seems that in that version, every item brought to the depot gives 7.5 experience points, presumably both for items the traders are carrying and for items your dwarves bring in. I suspect that that's probably still accurate. Since you can very easily have hundreds, or even thousands, of items at the depot if you're trading large numbers of crafts, you obviously get a massive amount of experience every time a caravan arrives.

So maybe it counts each individual unit in a stack as an item, so that that barrel of fifty dwarven rum counts as fifty units?

BTW do you also get 7.5 exp for goods BOUGHT or only for those sold to trading caravan?

I once flung a migrant off a bridge. He collided with the brook cliff and died.
A year later, my legendary engraver engraved him colliding with an obstacle and dying.

You get appraisal points for each item in the depot when your broker first opens the trade menu.  As far as I know you don't have to even buy/sell them.

Indeed, it seems to be for items bRought there (note the letter "r") in total.  It makes sense, as your appraiser must do a quick judgment on all the goods the traders brought in order for you to see it on the trade screen.  And, yes, if you bring nothing to the depot but still have your broker go into it, opening the trade screen alone gets you the experience (once per caravan).  You can test it with a completely untrained broker.

I noticed this in 40d. When I bumped up the trade capacity of everything that had one x10, I would often get a legendary appraiser each caravan. Made for good military training.
