The scent thing is only one of several reasons this might happen.

One of the possibilities is that it could actually be genetically predisposed to the behaviour, which would mean any surviving kittens could have it too. There's also plenty of other possible explanations, though.

Edit: If one of them was stillborn, it might be possible that the others also had invisible defects that she could detect, so she ate them to recoup her losses.

is it possible that cats in you world have the [VERMIN] tag as well as the [VERMIN_HUNTER]? this could be one explanation
