Urist's Training Stone Camp; Good idea?
« on: December 04, 2008, 01:48:04 am »

Utilizing obsidian farms, you too can hardball your dwarves, you can have them engrave, craft, dig, shoot, and anything else rock farm related.

You need an infinite lava source, an infinite water source, irrigation systems, and on site catapults and workshops.

Engraving, first you need to smooth, then engrave every available square.

Mining, you may need a large stone farm for this one.

Crafting, easy select the slaves, then build your sweatshop, make sure to keep it some distance from the farms, and not to drown them in lava, options vary for the crafts.

Catapults, use the stone made from the farm, have it so that the stones drop down when used, efficiency is capital.

Pump farms, useless but effective.

Swimming, this optional, but if you want you'll want to flood the non-farm/non-irrigation areas with 4/7 water.

Farming, totally off topic but if you got, you got to.

Building, with a possible revenue for block making, you may want to use them, then destroy the tower, from the top to bottom, and who knows, it may be pack with some things, when it collapses.

After many stones of labors you and your Dwarves will be muscular to a great fitness, it's like the natural way to the rumored legends of Asian ambition, the perfect warrior.

Or you can simply make a catapult with a ditch in front of it and a stair down. Dwarf shoots stone, dwarf picks up the same stone and shoots it again. No cancellation messages like pumps and the skill is actually vaguely useful

Is there any significance to the variability of your font sizes?

I suppose with the new version's rework of the attribute system, diverse training may make some sense.  However, all you'll really need is at most one task each that builds each attribute.  Any strength-builder will likely also build toughness, so that leaves maybe two repetitive tasks require for your dwarven boot camp.  Pump operation will probably handle the strength and toughness, so add one more activity and you're set.  You won't even need an obsidian farm.

From a powergaming POV, you only need one infinite source of experience for stat increasing. Any activity increases a stat at random; pumping is no more likely to increase strength than weaving is.

I'm a little confused as to what the OP is proposing here, you can easily get legendary dwarves in mining, engraving, crafting, etc etc just from carving out and running your fortress to begin with. I dont see the necessity in setting up an obsidian farm for the purposes of training these skills.

The only real reason to make an obsidian farm, is if you want obsidian, as I've never really found myself short of rock elsewise.

Well, obsidian is around three times more valuable than average rock, IIRC, not to mention if you got renewable magma and water source, you can build the whole place out of obsidian, some people like consistency in their fortress, easily done with renewable resource ( even if it takes a hundred times more labor and time in long run  ;D )

But! On-topic, all you really need is a screw pump farm to crank your dwarfies up, unless you really need megatonnes of obsidian bricks to rebuild the place, or for some evil goals  ;)

Well thats kinda what I was getting at, if you want swathes of obsidian blocks, then an obsidian farm is what you need. However if all you are going for is skill gains, why go to the bother of setting up an elaborate magma cooling machine when there is always plenty of useless stone literally laying about everywhere.

From my own experience (and yours obviously) setting up a bank of pumps as a dwarf 'gym' works wonders for fast tracking your military recruits stats or just beefing up your haulers a bit.
