How to get a lot of "z levels" available
« on: October 18, 2010, 02:08:46 pm »

As in the topic. I don't know how to get an area with a lot of z levels available, both above ground and underground.

it's annoying since caverns are always about 8-10 levels underneath the ground (really close and often ruining my planned layout of the fortress) and I don't get more than 30 z levels above ground which on the other hand screws me over when I want to build an execution tower a drop tower of splashy fun.

I was considering getting rid of caverns in the world generating options but that means no forgotten beasts (which are fun) and tbh I like the IDEA of natural caves.

So how do I fix both these things.

the "levels above layer x" option in the worldgen settings.  so design a world with parameters, hit e for advanced parameters, scroll down until you see "layers above x" x=5 is HFS, x=4 is Magma Sea, x=3 is cavern 3, x=2 cavern 2, x=1 cavern 1 and there is a z levels above highest point option or something similar.

do note that the large extra z levels will be mostly ingenious intrusive because the amount of upper layers are hard coded. Which mean you'd see enough baby blue and yellow you'd want to vomit. You be warned.

Ingenious intrusive?
Is that a creativity layer?
I'm assuming you mean igneous. These yellow and blue layers, however, may also contain valuable gems/ores/whathaveyou.

5 is actually Semi-Molten Rock. Layers at Bottom = HFS

you can make 5 a pretty big number like 40-100 and you'll have a nonsensical amount of the metal in there.

I usually set mine to about 25 levels and I find it multiples all your top layers.  I usually get four or five layers of limestone/chalk and more iron ores than I could ever use.

Igneous intrusive is one of the two igneous layers, the other being igneous extrusive. Intrusive is the layer that forms from magma cooling slowly underground as opposed to quickly in the open air. It contains stones like granite which contain an abundance of gems but also contains orthoclase which most people are very annoyed by due to it's bright color.

I like orthoclase. Need a good healthy source of yellow in your diet.

He was making fun of the fact that Rephikul mistyped igneous as ingenious. I'm pretty sure he knows what igneus intrusive actually is.
