Some newbie questions
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:14:24 am »

I'm on my first serious fortress, and I'm not sure about some stuff. Can anyone help?
I can't figure out how to tame animals. I've got a few animals in cages, but it doesn't seem to let me tame them.
And I don't seem to be getting any ambushes, even though my population's over 50 and my fortress is over a year old. Am I supposed to not be getting them yet, or am I just lucky (I'm using .12).

Build a kennel and make sure someone has the animal training labor enabled. The animals MAY have to be out of the cage to train, but im not sure.

gobbos and such work in .12 for sure, did you have goblins in your neighbors list on embark? are they listed in your civs screen? Have you had any thiefs or snatchers? have you created a lot of wealth, or are you just scraping by?

to be clearer on taming .. for non exotic wild animals taming goes best by building there cage (b-j-x to chose the exact one) and use the tame command (small animal for random smallie or tame large plus select animal for large one like elephant) .. after that the tame ones need to be released and can then be trained by train war dog(/animal) command

tame purchased exotic animals can be war trained just like that if they arrived as tames ... (all felines giant ones .. refer to war-compatible species in the wiki)

but never release a non tamed animal unless you got extra cagetraps nearby or some military ^^

esp. wild giant felines warthogs and esp. elöephants let loose may literally stomp your fortress just in panic and once they got hurt on full purpose :)
