Worldgen with forced sites
« on: October 11, 2010, 02:01:56 pm »

Make the worldgen have options to force site creation with features that you want.

For example: Major river, volcano, goblin tower. And various wanted biome areas.

I know such sites are possible, because I had one in 40d, (only with small river and dwarf tower).
I don't care for the consistency of the world as much as long as I get the wanted site and features
for my fortress.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

Personally I think playing Dwarf Fortress should be dealing with what you do and don't have and the features that I dislike missing are ones that dirrectly limit gameplay...

While the ones your listing are just conveniences that altogether would just make the game much easier.

But alas given the sheer amount of people who so desperately want magma and a river at all costs I guess I should just concede that it is another way of playing.

As for Goblin Tower I think you mean a Goblin tower as an enemy... While I don't want continuous war I don't really want continuous peace either (though I guess it isn't a bad thing either)... I mean a Fortress without War is just a fancy building.

The game should give an indication of peace and war status in an easy to see spot while selecting sites.

In times of peace, you could still struggle for dominance on the economic or political plane. Those areas of interest sorely need meat on their bones (and bones as well), because right now they are absolutely minimal (diplomacy) or interface hell (trade).

The problem that I see is that as you are able to specify the site to gen in more detail, what constitutes a "good" site will just rise to meet that. Right now a good site is volcano + river (+ flux?). If we're able to guarantee a site with a volcano, a river, and flux, then there will be the ones that are full of layers of sedimentary and igneous rock and the ones that are filled with metamorphic rock. The ones with sand and the ones without. The ones with extreme elevation change and the ones without. And so on, and so forth.

Though I would like to be able to see on the embark map (or find in the site finder) the above-magma-sea magma columns.

Rysith, while I would never use a "force site" option, I see no reason to stop people from getting a perfect site anyway. If they're going to enjoy the game more with a more exact setup, why stop them?:D

As I said. I would never use it, but it seems like the sort of suggestion that would make a lot of people happy, so I vote +1

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I guess once you have armies of your own... peace doesn't mean much since eventually the player will get the urge to piss someone off.
