interior walls
« on: October 03, 2010, 02:34:42 pm »

i would love the ability to build a wall on top of an existing floor.  so i can build a massive above ground complex without having to leave gaps in the floor for interior walls.  :D

You can't see the floor under the walls anyway, so what does it matter? Sides I just imagine that while makeing the wall they do the floor too, for a base for the wall.

its not about being able to see it.  im just not super good at planning so i make a big square floor and then plan out my interior you see.  it makes it easier to put it together.

You can d-n to remove constructions, remove the floors where you want the interior walls to go

Perhaps if you build a wall over an already constructed floor it could allow a dwarf to turn a stone floor into a stone wall but would take the same amount of time as deconstructing the floor and then building a wall?

That last suggestion by vattic would be a nice feature to have. There are certain times where it would save a lot of effort in setting everything just right.

I'd certainly appreciate it.  Especially due to the fickleness of the dwarves.  For example, I'll build an 8x8 square of floor.  Then I'd d->n out the areas I want walls in.  The problem is that when I tell them to construct a wall, they'll half the time cancel the construction because the floor material is still there, blocking construction.

Surely building on top of a floor would reduce construction time, Due to it invalidating the need to dig foundations.

You cannot build a wall of any strength on top of a floor. You have to remove the floor before you build a wall, IRL. If you build a wall without removing the floor the wall will be purely decorative with no structural strength whatsoever, and that is just entirely undwarven to build flimsy structures.

Hmm then all the mega fortresses held up by pillars of soap must be the most undwarven thing to do

That implies there is a floor there holding the material up, so you didn't need to build a floor there in the first place.

If you build a wall without removing the floor the wall will be purely decorative with no structural strength whatsoever, and that is just entirely undwarven to build flimsy structures.

In that case, you should be able to designate a wall on top of an existing floor, but any underlaying constructed floors should be AUTOMATICALLY DECONSTRUCTED before building the wall, AND the building material should be reused to build the wall.

EDIT: Oops, i just noticed that somebody's already suggested that...
