Being able to view the world bettar

One thing that I feel when I start my fortess is I'm cut off from the outside world. I know this will be semi-solved by a proper economy and carvans, but what I would want is the ability to veiw the world map, and to view some of the areas around my fortess. And then perhaps have the option to set up watchtowers or outposts (maybe mines?) later on in order to see more of the world. Another thing that would be cool is the ablity to see things that actually move, such as caravans, or on the flip side sieging armies (ambushes and smaller attacks would still be secret though). What else could you see? Little towns and hamlets? Huge enemy fortesses?...Its up to you

Another thing is perhaps being able to attack other areas and to claim them. So instead of being sieged all the time, you could send a few squads off to attack and destroy, or to raid other areas of the world.

Finally, going back to my idea on outposts, it would be cool if you could at least set small mines or such up that can trade with one another, so, in essense, you can establish your own mini dwarvy nation. Perhaps. But anyway what do you think?

Oh and for the making other outposts perhaps that could be a different mode? Civilazation mode or something.

No worries.  A lot of this is planned some other ideas have already been suggested.

But to expand on the idea of viewing surrounding areas: I think it would be cool if the accuracy of the map was determined by the skills of cartographers that made the map and what information they have and stuff, and perhaps details could be worked out better over the course of time and further explorations.  ...And that not everything is necessarily revealed on the map, only places that have been documented by in-game explorers.

The locations of armies and caravans and other mobile things, I think, like other things, should be dependent entirely on what is reported to the player and other relevant in-game entities by scouts and other sources of information, and such information, because of this, would be only information about last known position.  I don't think it should be some sort of fog-of-war/line of sight thing like in other games where you can see whatever moving across the map.  A scout should physically have to see the army/caravan/whatever, and come back to report to whoever.  And this could open things up to interesting stuff like scouts being killed before relaying information, or sources of information being able to lie to you about troop positions or something... :D
