Catching the Elusive Tigermen
« on: October 10, 2010, 11:02:14 am »

I've embarked in a tropical swamp, and I'd like to catch those tigermen. According to the raws, they like fighting, so I'm going to put a bait animal behind four cage traps. Hopefully, the tigermen rush in, wanting a feast, and get caught, allowing me to successfully tame and make a tigerman fortress. I'll have to feed them, though.
Anybody else have any luck catching the elusive tigermen?

I've also set my sights on the local plump helmet man population.

I caught an entire family of them once.  It's not that hard; just set up a trap wall in an area they migrate through.  I had the good luck of having my entrance corridor line up with both the Tigerman and Elephant migration patterns.

A trap wall, incidentally, looks something like this:

    o
   ^o^
   ^o^
 ^^^o^^^
ooooooooo
 ^^^o^^^
   ^o^
   ^o^
    o

EDIT: One last warning: don't leave them in their cages.  Tigermen have to drink water regularly or they die of dehydration.  I lost half of said Tigerman family to that little caveat.

I usually use the standard "trap crossing" design that funnels animals through the middle and cages them. I also generally embark on rivers, so when I build a floor bridging the river, cage traps get put on it every time.

EDIT:^^^yeah, that thing.

The mermaids tasted pretty good though.

Anyway, your best bet i think would be to randomly trap different areas around the map, especially in places where animals are likely to move around trying to get to the edges or some such to leave. I don't think I've seen [LIKES_FIGHTING] animals bumrush a pet just because they see it, but rather because it's too close. I have never seen them surrender once they do start a fight. Your animal will more likely prevent them getting near the trap.
