Some ideas i have
« on: September 29, 2010, 07:24:09 am »

I have to say at first that im new here, and english not my 1st lang. I lurked the forums a bit and dont have seen threads or post of this, other than my own. But if someone can point me in the right direction i have a thanks in advance.

I will simply love to have an e(x)pand to select quality of doors/tables/chairs/etc when building other than taking the furniture to the place before build, instead of just materials. Also some function to see what is in a damn bin when i have to move it to the trade depot

Regarding to animals and dwarfs, i have not seen a way to mount a tame/war beast (im pretty sure that someone post of this) but i think that construct some kind of metal/rock tower to "armor" an elephant and garrison a dwarf in it (maybe like a fortification effect) would be awesome, or some leather saddle or mount to ride war giant eagles
Also, i think that making mechanism (posibly metal mechanism) to "repair" severed body parts (maybe an use for alchemy?) to put back together those that has been crippled (maybe a lot of mechanism, and a lot of time will be need to "repair" a dwarf, to do it just to few really good dwarves, and not to make armies of mechanic dwarves, even with a few drawbacks like loose musical inspiration/creativity or something o_O)

The game is going great as it is, but i think that this 3 things will be epic, and just want to leave it here to see opinions. I have played very little dwarf fortress so far (4 or 5 80~90 dwarfs fort) but i hope to magically think more cool ideas i'd like to see in it. (and i will post in this thread as they come arround xD)

PD: I forgot to put this idea (and since nobody reply i edit) you could make an invasion force. A lot of heavy armed dwarves, then to the invade screen (maybe with an appointed noble?) then select a fotress/ruin/city (perhaps only the ones in war with you) and make a calculation of aprox. time to last, between journey in, attack/siege, journey back.
Afterwards you get the spoils, riches, prisioners, metals, etc. or the loss of the assault dwarves

And last, please correct my english if you can, it would make that an horrible post like this be more easy to read

Well, i believe Toady may be working on mounts, although i'm not sure if that's just adventurer mode, but I know that invasion forces are up in the current goals section, so that should be up within a few releases.

In a World without Walls and Fences, who needs Gates and Windows?
You could bite into your computer screen, chipping teeth and fucking up the screen.

You can create stockpiles that sort on quality. Just create a custom stockpile [c] in the stockpile screen, or make a furniture stockpile and then go back to it with [q]. You can customize it to filter to a specific quality. Then you can just [f]orbid items in any stockpiles (like maybe your low quality pile) that you don't currently want to use.

You can already view the contents of a bin from the Trade screen. When you highlight a bin that is yours, I believe its [v] to view it. It will then show you some info about the bin ("base value" and whatnot) as well the contents, which you can scroll through. You can also view the descriptions of those items as normal.

I don't think animal armor is in the game, but that would be very cool. Mounts are on the dev list, I think.

There are splints now, I think. Not sure if they do anything yet. Prostheses would be nice to have in the game though, especially peglegs.

Invasions have been mentioned in other threads before, it seems like a pretty popular request and something that will fit nicely into the late game.

I know i can sort stockpiles by quality, and i know that i can see the contents of a bin, but i was thinking that no need to explain it.
I will elaborate it:

An option to choose material and quality JUST as workshops has, but for building doors, tables, chairs, statues, etc. -yea, i have at least my belobed masterwork bauxite door, after many attempts. (b)uild> (d)oor> e(x)pand> select- (just that easy, no stockpiles forbiding o anything) because is at least something that i have to use a lot, and i think that an expand option right there, will be very useful, for all players not just me, and is a minimal detail that (i think) would be very simple to modify.

An option to see the content of a bin JUST in the trade goods screen, because when you have a lot of similar bins and you want to trade a "finished goods bin" of cups and you NOT a finished goods bin of toys (or that special finished goods bin that you dont want to drag to the trade depot because just DONT want the traders to see it or watever reason...) i think that dragging trough the fortress a lot of bins just because the stupid broker dont want to see what is inside, just not make any sense
-elven traders: i think that the display of 1324141415 WOODEN bins just to trade 6 cups for some food and a dog is asking for war-

Ah, you're talking about building items out of specific materials. Thats been suggested numerous times. Given that you can do that with metal items, it seems logical that it should be in there. There are all sorts of tricks about putting stockpiles close to the masons workshop and whatnot, but they are a bit silly when we just need one more menu screen.

You can view the contents of a bin in the "bring items to depot" screen. You don't have to haul them all to the trade depot to see them. As I recall, if you highlight it, I think its [v] to pull up the info about just that one bin. I do this all the time when choosing which bins to bring to the trade depot.
