Caravans and Sieges
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:11:57 am »

A human caravan arrives, and 30 seconds later a goblin siege; 4 goblin squads, one mounted, one Troll squad. I immediately order my archers to their pillbox and my melee to the fortified courtyard. My archers more or less destroy the two squads in the south (including the archers) from their pillbox. The human caravan looks safe, it's almost all inside the courtyard except for one donkey and one human pikeman that engaged the trolls.

Just as the drawbridge lever is about to be pulled out runs the only Legendary Marksdwarf, I assume he wanted his bolt back. The best Marksdwarf cannot be sacrificed to the goblins, so all the melee sallies forth to rescue him. Battle is joined with one of the goblin squads and the trolls. Both are easily dispatched, all squads are ordered back to safety, since the mounted goblin squad is lagging behind. But what is this? The humans are charging the goblins? Well, ok, let's go rescue them too.

All in all, it was a good fight. No dwarven casualties, a few war dogs died valiantly, quite a few human fighters, but the liason and merchants are alive. We do the magical trading thing, I kick myself for not forbidding used ammo, and WAIT! WTF? Three humans were caught in my cage traps!?

What are the reprecussions for having caravans attacked? I want to release the captured humans, but will they turn on me?

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

The humans were caught because they fell unconscious on your cage traps, causing them to be caught.

They won't turn on you if you release them, unless you take too long to do so, then they might just go insane, but no civ will attack you over one fallen caravan.

Heck I had to drown no less than 5 elven caravans in my elf cleansing chamber to get them to finally attack me.
