i had a working fortress and everything was fine when i ran out of wood in my stockpile so i cut down more trees.  and the logs stayed where they fell forever.. no dwarf would move them to a stockpile no matter how many empty wood stockpiles i placed.  my idle dwarfs would go to any other job and then return to idle but wouldn't touch wood.  any ideas?

Don't beat yourself up. Even geniuses get thwarted by Dorf Fort on occasion

Make sure you have:
- at least one idle dwarf with the wood hauling labor enabled
- not accidently messed up the gathering (o)rders
- not assigned the dwarves to a burrow
- still an unblocked passage between your stockpiles and the outside wood logs
- not forbidden any wood
