New player asking for advice with military.
« on: October 08, 2010, 12:53:31 pm »

Hello, I'm new to the game and the newb tut has saved my life. I'm loving this game, even if at first I was scared of the STEEP learning curve.

Now the question. In the newb tut it covered military but I think it covered an older version? I can't work out how to make my squads train or do anything really...

Can somebody please link me to a video that "holds your hand" teaching the new military? Or just explain how to do it like I'm an idiot? I tried the wiki and searching myself but after HOURS of trying to do it I am still seeing no results.

Someone please help me with this, I'm pretty hopeless lol. Thanks!

Was the tutorial you used the one stickied here?  That holds your hand through the military (and everything else, really) of DF2010.

edit: Or maybe that one is too old now...  That's the best tut I know of, though.

Ok, so scratch all that, I remembered captduck

Watch the 2010 ones, there's only 8 or 9.

Ok so now I know how to farm better.... does he go over the military in more depth then the third video? because it's a bit fast and I'm still not getting it.

Reason I'm asking is that it's going to take my more then an hour to get through these vids.... and I'd like to learn military now.

Thanks for the help.

The military is kind of confusing and broken. There's a quick guide on the wiki if you need a primer.

You assign these from the {m}ilitary screen
Basically dwarves form squads, with 1-10 members.
Squads have schedules, so they can have orders to train for a few months, rest a few months, or guard, patrol, etc.
You can also set up alerts to mobilize squads, civilians, or lock civilians to burrows.
Last but not least you can edit and assign uniforms which govern the armor and weapons wieleded by your mighty yet short drunks.

If you want to mobilize just a few squads manually that's done via the {s}quads command. You select which squads you want, and you can order them to move to a location, or kill target(s).

This is a feature, not a bug, correct?
You're playing Dwarf Fortress.  There isn't much of a distinction.

That is an excellent summary, bcd1024.

The only things I'd add are:
* meleers should be put in your best armor you can muster, and don't skimp on the clothes underneath, as they are the only things that can protect the areas that armor doesn't protect.
* Bone armor is all you need for a melee squad if all they fight is beserking (non-military) dwarves
* Make all your crossbows out of silver or iron--- crossbowdwarves use their crossbows as hammers when they are in HTH, and hammers need mass, not edge.
* You can train up your military melee squads by sending them out to kill local wildlife. Or you can construct an arena, station them in it, and put caged animals/prisoners into the arena and release it.

It is easy to make squads and activate them just for those times you need them via the station and kill commands from the (s)quad menu. Just remember to deactivate them when their job is done. Scheduling them for duty and training is a bit more involved.

Also I CAUGHT A FREAKING BIRD! woot! wtf can I do with it? I think its a vulture!

Edit:
Lol, I just read the wiki on rose gold, and at the end it says "it's really a question of how important it is that you get purple metal". When I found out I could make purple stuff I squealed like a turkey!

That's exactly how I was still am.  I predict a long and happy relationship with DF.   :)

Gosh I'm in trouble! A little twat just got moody and I have no silk for him. I need to know how to make my sqwad equip the armour and the weapons I made. Also how to station them near the workshop. I know thats asking a bit but the wiki is hard to understand... I'll continue reading it while I wait. Also can I get the dwarf with a trap?

If you found a cave with spider webs, you can send dwarves collecting silk via the loom workshop (Collect webs).

To have your dwarves equipped, it's in the military screen (m), and then in the equip (e) menu. You will be able to tell them what they should use.

To station the military somewhere, mobilize them through the squad (s) menu, select a squad with the corresponding letter, and then tell them to move (m) somewhere.

Don't quote me on that.
Cacame channels aquifers into submission by staring at them. Cacame is so badass, kobolds give him their children to leave them alone. If Hidden Fun Stuff digs too far down, they hit Cacame. Cacame once took a Tantrum Spiral and impaled four enemies on it.

You can also build walls around him so he can't escape and bother others.

Look into pitcheblende, petrified wood, etc.

You can lock him in the workshop. Apparently, beserking dwarves can't break a door. I build all my workshops in there own 3 x 4 room with a 3 x 1 approach so I can put a door on them and lock in any berserking frustrated dwarf. The extra space is for anything special I want the shop to use, such as putting a garbage dump in for stone in the mason's workshop, etc.

To get your squad to stand somewhere, use the (s)quad menu, and "station" the squad outside the workshop. Ordering a squad to station or kill activates them. Once on station, they'll start running off in ones and twos, grabbing the equipment uniform you assigned the squad when you created the squad. Once you no longer need that squad stationed there, just use the (s)quad menu to cancel their station order, and they will go back to their civilian tasks.

Big hint:  Look up the Danger Room on the wiki.

Best training method in the game hands down.  Inside of a year you'll have 10 dwarves who are legendary in a weapon skill, shield use, and fighting, and will make mincemeat of most critters you'll run into (Including FB's that don't have ubercheap attacks!).

If you haven't seen the wiki, it is your best friend.  See it here

Wow this has been usefull :) Twat got pwnd and now all i need to do is train which i think i need to scedule? I've hit a dead end trying to train the hammer dudes.

How far can a crossbow weapon trap fire? can it fire up and down? can i put more then one in the same one to make it deadlier? I think crossbow traps will be bad ass.

These forums have a very funny and helpful community :D

Edit: ok I just changed their thingy in squad menu to active/training. they are not training how ever:( aren't they supposed to go to barracks and wrestle or something like that?

You have to assign a training barracks for them.

Create a barracks from an armor stand or weapon stand (There's other items that can do it too, but I don't remember what they are)

Use the (q)uery menu on the stand to make it into a barracks.  After setting that, use (q)uery again to assign your squad (or squads) to it , then hit T to set the barracks to a Training barracks.  Then your people should wander in to train.
