I just made a new world and it has an awesome volcanic island.

However, if I embark there will I ever get migrants, traders and/or attacks/sieges?

Migrants, Yes
Traders, only dwarves.
Sieges, no
Attacks, only wild animals, FBs, cavern civs, and clowns.

Press tab a few times on the embark screen.  You'll find a list of all contact-able civilizations.  If it's truly an island, though, you probably only will have dwarfs listed, meaning you'll get immigrants and dwarf trade caravans, but no gobbos, elves or humans.

If the island is on the same region tile as the mainland you can embark on an area which spans between a portion of the island and the mainland then abandon and your island will now have access to all the other civs, you don't even have to build a bridge or anything, the game counts your abandoned embark as a connection.  If your island is way out in the ocean you are out of luck though.
