My most interesting moment as of yet (and first elven ambush!)
« on: October 09, 2010, 09:58:24 am »

I'll get this out of the way right now. I was trying to make a peaceful fortress.

"WHAT!?" you may say, to which I respond "Shut up and let me finish."

The world I have genned is a terrible place. I did not know it when I embarked, but the humans have been all but wiped out, and the Dwarves are nearing the same fate. I was building a peaceful fortress because I wanted to finally get a stable economy, THEN kill the shit out of everyone. You know, while their guard was down. But the Elves beat me to it.

I was focusing on constructing and encrusting crafts. Everyone worked to better the economy or expand the fortress. It was beautiful. I was dug down into the earth, and right next to a waterfall, so we could use the fresh water from the bottom.

It was spring of my third year in Matchoils. Only a dwarven caravan had come. I figured it was due to the destruction of the Elves and Humans at the hands of the superior and callused hands of the Dwarven empire. I had no military, as I said earlier, everyone was a craftsdwarf of some sort and I had riches beyond anything I've ever had before (without spoilerite and not a single mood). Then it happened. One of my war dogs chained at the entrance ramp spotted a kobold thief. The tiny bastard was torn apart. My huntsdwarves were leaving the walled area at the top of the ramp when they encountered a second almost at the exact same time. And that's when it went to shit. The Elven ambush. There were only eight of them but three were astride mounts, and one of the mounted bastards was a markself. They struck fast and without mercy. The huntsdwarves retreated down the ramp, firing -cat bone bolt- and -donkey bone bolt- as fast as they could, injuring a few Elves and killing one of the horses. They were overran, dismembered, and killed. The Elves entered the fortress, maiming and killing any who stood in their way.

My mason, who had seen his wife murdered before his very eyes, charged a swordself who already had multiple kills to his name.

The Elf stood no chance.

Using his bare hands, the mason pummeled the elf to a pulp, taking his sweet time with it.

On the floor below, my broker looked up from his work as his door was kicked open. An elf charged in, cutting through his neck. The elf did not realize his error. He was trapped in a small room, two angry dwarves close behind. He killed one before being taken out.

The elves began to pull back after killing fully one third of the population. They had obviously not expected such fury. One of the dwarves was brutally murdered, having been diced apart. The dwarves ran past their comrade who was still being pummeled by the mason. He looked up from the pulpy elven body and stared right into another swordself's eyes. The mason grabbed him, pulled him down, and proceeded to break every bone in the weak elven body.

Blood caked the walls. Armok must have been pleased, because as the elves fled, my tanner was possessed.

I will be ready next time. These Elves will feel steel dig into flesh and bone. The three dead elves will be displayed before the walls of my fortress, serving as a warning to those who wish to come down upon us. My citizens may not be military grade (though that is changing), but they will still fight as an unholy terror.

I also saw a dwarf cleaning the walls. YAY!

There is no enemy like a Dwarf Fortress with a chip on its shoulder. That story was awesome, I didn't survive my first ambush.

Live long if you can, and prosper by any means necessary.  Any means, Urist.  So pull that lever, or by Armok, I'll lock you outside come next siege.
He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.
